Specialized DEF Suppliers Put an End to Headaches for Fleet Managers

Many fleet vehicles run on diesel fuel, a resource that can be converted into mechanical power more efficiently than gasoline. Modern diesel engines are designed to run with notably lean air-to-fuel ratios to ensure the soot they would otherwise emit will be burned up completely.

While that is an effective way of addressing what used to be a common problem, it gives rise to some additional, related challenges. When diesel engines are tuned to run at particularly lean ratios, they generate significant amounts of various compounds made up of the gases nitrogen and oxygen.

Unlike black, ugly soot, these nitrogen oxides are more or less invisible, but they pose definite threats of other kinds. In addition to being toxic, nitrogen oxides contribute to localized environmental problems like smog when they are emitted in any quantity.

A Solution That Gives Rise to Real Challenges

Fortunately, there is an effective way to break down these compounds before they escape the exhaust systems of vehicles that would otherwise produce them. Injecting an inexpensive substance called diesel exhaust fluid into a specially designed chamber will virtually eliminate nitrogen oxides from a vehicle's exhaust stream.


Just as adopting a lean air-to-fuel ratio solved one problem while creating new issues to be addressed, so does the use of diesel exhaust fluid, or DEF, also make for additional difficulties. While DEF is quite effective at reducing the emission of nitrogen oxides, it is inherently challenging to handle or even keep in storage.

Unfortunately, DEF that becomes contaminated or breaks down before being injected into an exhaust stream will not perform its function as intended. This can see a diesel-powered vehicle generating illegal amounts of certain emissions despite being supplied with DEF meant to prevent that from happening.
